World Of Warcraft Maps

Azeroth, and Outland, the two main worlds that players of the Blizzard Entertainment game World of Warcraft explore and adventure over in the game, are huge and detailed. It is a good idea for a player to know where he/she is. The Alliance and the Horde, the two main factions of the game, have outposts, bases, and cities scattered all over. An unwary player could accidentally waltz right into the opposing faction’s outpost, and have a sudden visit to the Spirit Healer.

There are two in-game maps; the world map, and the mini-map.

The world map is the big picture of Azeroth and Outland. The world map only displays areas the player as already explored. Roads, zones, cities, and geographic features are all displayed on the world map. The world map displays icons for local building and dungeons.

Map coordinates are vital when questing. The world map (hit the M key when playing) does not have an automatic coordinate display. An add-on is required for this. There are several out there, and they mostly all do the same thing: provide xy coordinates for both the player’s location and the location of the cursor. A map coordinate add-on is the single most indispensable add-on a player needs.

Please note that dungeons and instances are not available on the world map, you can only get the limited mini-map view. There are add-ons that contain world-map views of dungeons and instances.

The in-game mini-map is vital for a player when both exploring and when questing. The mini-map offers an overhead view of the area around a character. The mini-map has limited zooming, in and out.

The mini map offers a few vital features.

  • The name of the region (or city) that your character is in

  • The local geography

  • The location of your character appears as a silver arrow pointing in the direction (N, E, W, S) you’re current facing

  • A tombstone icon to indicate your corpse when dead

  • Nearby party members appear as blue dots. Arrows point to far-off party members.

  • Some classes have the ability to detect humanoids, beasts, or demons; these detections appear on the mini-map as dots

  • Some professions can detect resources, such as mining nodes or herbs to harvest; these detections appear on the mini-map as dots

  • Completed quest turn-ins appear as gold dots on the mini-map

  • Day or night, and the current server time

  • A “You have mail” icon indicates when there is unread mail for the player

Printed and/or online maps of Azeroth are available. There are map posters and printed atlases for those who want see Azeroth and Outland off line. There are also many on-line sources for maps, some maps are even interactive.

    • The Light and How to Swing It: The framework for our Mists rotation

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Light and How to Swing It for holy, protection and retribution paladins. Protection specialist Matt Walsh spends most of his time receiving concussions for the benefit of 24 other people, obsessing over his hair (a blood elf racial!), and maintaining the tankadin-focused blog Righteous Defense. The biggest change for players with every expansion is undeniably getting acclimated to the new and different buttons that one has to work with, ie, the new rotation. If you poll players on their least favorite part of the next phase of the game rolling over, invariably a large percent will shout how annoyed they are with "having to relearn their class." Some abilities which were juggernauts are suddenly akin to balloons with the air rushing out of them, others that were middle of the road also-rans are suddenly hot tickets. Getting to the point where you once again have a good sense of your class is often a pain. While the beta is far from final, and the numbers are (of course) subject to change many times over, we're still at a point where we can begin to make some sense out of the design-equivalent of watching sausage being made. We won't know be able to say with 100% conviction which fillers are best when and where, but we can assuredly say what the framework of the rotation will be.Continue reading The Light and How to Swing It: The framework for our Mists rotationFiled under: Paladin, (Paladin) The Light and How to Swing ItThe Light and How to Swing It: The framework for our Mists rotation originally appeared on WoW Insider on Sun, 27 May 2012 20:00:00 EST. • 4 reasons Mists of Pandaria will still have bugs after launch

Many testers at Blizzard are putting Mists of Pandaria through its paces. Many more closed beta testers are doing the same thing. Yet no matter how diligent we all are, and no matter how accurately we report issues, there will still be quite a few bugs that will be in the game after launch. Changes. Right up to launch, fixes are being made and tested, but these improvements are not being tested as long as the changes that were made several weeks earlier. What seems to work at Blizzard QA and during the end of the beta, may fail miserably when a jillion people use it on launch day. Not all bugs that were found were reported. Maybe Blizzard's QA is far more talented than most, and no one is lazy and/or disgruntled, but most testing departments have a bad apple or 6 that can't be bothered to enter in all the bugs they find. Also, beta testers often think "Well, that must have already been reported," and don't do anything about it. Or "I'll write it up after ... oooh shiny!" If the programmers don't know about the bugs, amazingly enough, they don't get fixed. Hush, Captain Obvious. • Know Your Lore: State of the Alliance, 2012

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You're playing the game, you're fighting the bosses, you know the how -- but do you know the why? Each week, Matthew Rossi and Anne Stickney make sure you Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft. It has never been harder to be Alliance. Throughout the years of war brought about by the orcish invasion of Azeroth, the Alliance has seen its ups and downs. During that first assault, Stormwind was destroyed, its king assassinated. However, the direct result of this was an Alliance of kingdoms that paved the way for the Alliance as we know it today -- a smart, level-headed group of races focused on survival. The survival of each race individually, and the survival of the world as we know it. A noble cause, and the Alliance is well-known for its nobility. Yet despite bouncing back from that original, horrific assault, the Alliance seems to be in a downward spiral in the days of Cataclysm, one which is spinning horrifically out of control. And despite the best efforts of Alliance leaders, trying to staunch the flow of death and despair is becoming increasingly more difficult. This has much to do with the effects of the Shattering, and even more to do with those enemies of old; the orcs and their united allies in the Horde. Even though the Alliance has come back before, the question of whether or not they can do it again is a heavy one that weighs on the minds of all. It has never been so hard to be Alliance, it has never been this dark. Or so popular opinion states.Continue reading Know Your Lore: State of the Alliance, 2012Filed under: Lore, Know your LoreKnow Your Lore: State of the Alliance, 2012 originally appeared on WoW Insider on Sun, 27 May 2012 16:00:00 EST.
